Wedding On A Budget

Published on September 17th, 2015

Budgeting

We all know how expensive weddings can get-the average cost is over $30,000! While it is important to invest in your big day, there are ways to lower overall spending. The first thing you need to do is set a budget. Deviating a little bit will not be the end of the world, but without a budget, spending will get out of hand quickly. On top of setting a budget, make sure to refer to it throughout the process to make sure you are on track.

Once you have your budget, decide what is the most important to you and your fiancée. For example, if it is important for you to invite your very large family, understand that you will be spending more money on a bigger venue, more invitations, and extra food and drink. However, if you are willing to spend less elsewhere, this is doable. By determining what the more important parts of the wedding are, you can figure out where to allocate money.

Venue/Date

While wedding season is typically the summer, a great way to save money is having a fall or winter wedding. Venues give out deals because of the lower demand, and guests are not sick of weddings by then. In addition to having your wedding outside of peak months, you can consider having your wedding on a Friday or Sunday rather than a Saturday. This can save you up to 50% on venue-related details!

Food/Drink

The cost of food and drinks really adds up, especially if you are having a large wedding. By serving dinner with a buffet, you can save on cost without sacrificing quality. With your cake, have a smaller display cake, and then a large sheet cake to supplement. Look for hidden costs, such as cake-cutting or champagne toasts, and try to avoid them as much as possible. An open bar is very expensive, so if you will be having one, see if you can bring your own. Buying in bulk at places like Woodman’s will save you a ton. You can also consider just serving wine and beer because they are less expensive than liquor.
